Will was in Grade 3 when we first met him. He was a great kid but he attended a school that had let him down academically and he was being bullied as well. William had ‘switched off’ and didn’t want to go to school any more. He was frustrated because, “I can’t read very well” so, in May 2007, I started teaching Will the basic phonics rules. Within 8 weeks Will went from Level 18 to Level 22 of the school’s graded reading library and by November he rang me with the news that he had completed all 30 Levels. Will had become an independent reader.
When he was in Grade 5 will told me, “Now I read every night, every morning and every chance I get. I love reading. I’ve read the whole Deltora series and now I’m reading the Eragon series.”
Will’s Grade 5 NAPlan results were well above the expected standard and together we wrote and published his first book called, “Fishing For Kids”. At his recent book launch, William impressed everyone present when he spoke confidently in front of over 80 people. He also spoke very well during a live interview on ABC radio and he was interviewed by two local newspapers. Click on Fishing For Kids to learn more about Will’s fishing book.
Will’s confidence and self esteem has grown tremendously since 2007.
This has been greatly helped by his dad who is a firm believer in positive parenting. William and his dad learn karate together and this has helped Will learn self discipline and how not to be intimidated by bullies. William is currently in Year 9 and his recent parent-teacher interviews revealed he is doing very well at school. He’s also a very busy kid outside of school. He plays Aussie Rules Football, swims competitively with the local swimming club, trains sheep dogs and cares for his pet rabbits and guinea pigs. He’s also written his second book called, ‘Training Man’s Best Friend’. This book is a comprehensive guide for kids to learn how to care for, and train, a dog from go to whoa. It’s book written by a kid for other kids so it’s very easy to use and understand. It also contains a bonus section clearly outlining how to teach a dog how to work sheep.
